Hands are a natural breeding ground for germs, in fact they are one of the principal carriers of disease-causing germs. Nearly 80% of infections are spread by hand, so encouraging good hand hygiene behaviours is an effective way to stop germs spreading.
15 October is Global Handwashing Day, an annual opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of proper handwashing habits to help prevent the spread of infection and reduce sickness.
The theme for this year’s Global Handwashing Day is “Our hands, our future!”
The Global Handwashing Partnership website says, “This theme reminds us that handwashing protects our own health, but also allows us to build our own futures, as well as those of our communities, and the world. Because hand washing is an affordable, effective way to achieve these goals, by having the power to improve access to education for children, protect the health of patients and communities, and reduce inequities. Promoting the benefits and practice of handwashing with soap, as well as fostering access to and improving hygiene facilities, will help us work towards a future where that potential is realized.”
